Ann Arbor's Mighty Good Coffee now open in Jefferson Market spaceANN ARBOR, MI - Residents of nearby neighborhoods and regulars are visiting the the new Mighty Good Coffee location now open in the Jefferson Market, 609 W. Jefferson. The market across from Bach Elementary School switched hands at the end of February when the previous owner, Mary Rasmussen, sold the property to Mighty Good Coffee. It continues to operate as Jefferson Market.
Nic Sims said Mighty Good received a warm welcome on its first day, Monday, April 10. She and her husband, Dave Myers, of Mighty Good Coffee, had their eye on the location for years and were excited to take over the space. "It was full and steady," Sims said. "We wanted to get the door open as soon as possible, to get started and start making some coffee." Along with Mighty Good coffee, specialty drinks, and take-out lunch items, Sims is making homemade pastries like rhubarb cakelets and banana chocolate chip muffins in the kitchen at the back of the shop. "These are things we made for ourselves and our family," said Sims, adding the kitchen has a lot of potential for a more extensive menu. Some familiar touches and furnishings remain, like the glass-fronted case and long green counter that runs through the middle of the seating area, marked with bouquets brought as gifts from neighbors and loyal customers. They may notice the space is brighter, Sims noted, with fresh paint and newly-revealed windows that let the spring sunshine stream inside. Red and white Mighty Good mugs line the shelves behind the register, while children's books are stacked in a bookshelf for younger patrons. "We wanted it to be really friendly," Sims said. "We wanted to start simple, and grow into it." The business is still hiring for kitchen and barista positions; those interested can apply online. Mighty Good Coffee has three locations in Ann Arbor: 217 N. Main; 1335 S. University and 3010 Washtenaw. The new Jefferson Market location, offering take-out lunches and Sunday brunch, is also listed on its website. The Jefferson Market website itself is now updated, describing the "latest incarnation" of the Ann Arbor icon as a "combined cafe and lunch/ brunch bistro" featuring locally-roasted coffee and New American comfort food made with Michigan produce. New hours are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Brunch is available on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 10 a.m., starting this weekend. Expect the menu to change slightly as the new owners adjust to the customer base, Sims said, but not much else. Jefferson Market has been an establishment for decades, with some Ann Arbor residents remembering it as Johnny's Market.
